Child Funeral Fund introduced in Northern Ireland

One of the most challenging things a family can face is the death of a child. The Child Funeral Fund, announced by Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey, is a welcome development to support bereaved families by easing some of the financial stress at such a difficult time.

What is the Child Funeral Fund?

From 1 June 2022 bereaved families will receive financial support towards the cost of a child’s funeral through the Child Funeral Fund. The Child Funeral Fund is a one-off lump sum payment of £3,056. This can be paid directly to the family or to the funeral director, or split between both.

Please note the Child Funeral Fund is only available for families in Northern Ireland, there are similar forms of support for families in England, Scotland and Wales.

Who is eligible?

This support is not means-tested and so is available to everyone regardless of how much you earn or have in savings. You do not need to be in receipt of any benefits to be eligible, nor will this payment have any effect on other benefits your household may be in receipt of.

The Child Funeral Fund is available if you have taken responsibility for the funeral costs and the following criteria apply:

  • The child was under 18 at the time of their death, or was stillborn after the 24th week of pregnancy
  • the funeral has taken place on or after 1 June 2022
  • the claim is made within 6 months of the date of the funeral.
