Settling your child into childcare and you back at work

The transition for your child into childcare and you back to work can be an upheaval.

Take time to make sure that both your child are happy and relaxed with the arrangements.

It can be a good idea to arrange to visit the new childcare provision at least twice with your child. You should stay with them, but in the background. This will ease both your child and you into their new surroundings. Then try leaving your child for a short time, building up to the longer periods, when you need to return to work. If you can afford it, consider returning to work gradually with a phased return or lesser hours.

Once you return to work, don't just drop your child with the childcare provider and hurry off. Take time to make sure they are settled and that the childcare provider knows their eating, sleeping patterns etc. Don't be afraid to ask tell your childcare provider their routines, or habits. It may help to take something familiar for babies and small children, such as a cuddly toy or comfort blanket to make separation easier.

Your child will pick up on your mood, so try to be positive and happy about both your days ahead when you drop them off. Make sure you give a clear, non-prolonged good-bye, slipping off may lead to panic, once they realize you have gone, and may make them more reluctant to go again. Establish this as a pattern to the day.

Don't be afraid to telephone your childcare provider during the day to check that your child has settled ok. You will also settle easier knowing your child is content.

Don't be afraid to leave work promptly. Your child should come first and good employers will understand your family commitments.

When you pick your child up take time to find out how their day went. Put your work worries aside and prioritize on your child's day.

Ask the childcare provider how they have been, what they have done that day. Ask if they provide progress updates. Let them know your expectations and share information with them on an on-going basis.

If you are not happy about any aspect of the childcare, discuss it with your childcare provider. Look for compromises and solutions. If things do not improve, check out notice periods and look for alternative childcare.
