From April 2006 an Approved Home Childcarer Scheme (ie registration for nannies) came into effect in Northern Ireland.  This is a new category of approved childcare introduced by the Government to allow parents to have their children cared for in their own home and be able to receive financial help towards the cost of employing an approved childcarer either through the childcare element of tax credits or childcare vouchers.

In order to become an approved childcarer (for example some-one currently working as a nanny) a person must be:

  • Over eighteen
  • Have a recognised childcare qualification (or have attended an appropriate induction course)
  • Have a first aid qualification
  • Have had a police check carried out

More information on the scheme is available on www.childcarechoices.n-i.nhs.uk .  There are three booklets to download from this website :

  • ‘Employing a Home Childcarer: A Guide for Parents’
  • ‘Becoming an Approved Home Childcarer: A Guide for Home Childcarers’
  • the application form

The application form must be submitted to the Early Years Team for your area.  Contact details are available on the above website or alternatively contact Employers For Childcare on 0800 028 3008.
